How much traffic is a website getting?

Web traffic is a measure of a website’s or blog’s popularity. It’s probably the main criteria for choosing a site to advertise on. Problems is, unless a webmaster or blogger provides us the traffic stats, which are private and accesible only to them, we don’t really really know for sure how many visitors their sites are getting per day.

The only online tool we know of that can give us an estimate of a site’s traffic is Alexa. However, it’s not really that accurate. Some Advertising services also provide a summary of sort of sites within their system, such as ProjectWonderful but we still need to log-in. Are there any online tools we can use for a cursory view of any site’s traffic stats?

There are actually several services which provide this information, although much like Alexa, they are only estimates of traffic. Check out Ranking.com, Compete.com and Quantcast.com – all respected, relatively accurate services.

I second Quantcast. Very accurate and gives you a breakdown of demographics as well.

I use both Compete and Quantcast to get a fairly good estimate.

Sometimes you get lucky with Quantcast, and the site is actually using the Quantcast tracking script — giving you pretty accurate results. If not, usually I double the estimate from Compete and find that I’m pretty close to the actual number.

Sometimes, though, you see wildly different numbers from the two. In that case, you have to look for some other indicator for which one is more correct.

nice post. i agree, quantcast and compete are pretty good inicators, and i think the more different estimates you get the better a picture you’ll have to go on.

Other than the “ranking” of any particular opinion site, what else is important for traffic? What parameters do these ranking sites use other than having some way of counting every single hit that comes their way and what makes one site better than the other??
    Thanks

I’ve spent a lot of time looking at various services. I find Quantcast the most reliable. Compete also does very well. Alexa is used by a lot of people that don’t know any better since their numbers are at best random.

Google Analytics are great. However, it is very hard to get access to the Google Analytics for sites that you are exploring.

Part of the reason I recommend QuantCast is that there numbers seem to most closely track Google Analytics as well as my own internal statistics.

You should actually use statcounter. That will give you all the traffic information you need including the countries visiting you, the links people clicked the most, their entry and exit pages, etc. Check it out!

I’ve used quantcast before, and found it to be very useful, particularly for keyword research.

Alexa, Google Trends (for websites), Quantcast, Compete are the leading providers and none of them can be considered accurate. But normally you can get a decent idea by using any of the 2.

Website traffic should be more by doing SEO on particular sites. So we need to check the backlinks even to get high page rank in Google. Thanks for the analysis.

What I think is, alexa gives information on only those sites which have stood for a long time. For a site to get its info on alexa will surely take time. I think even adsense gives a superficial overview of traffic when put on all pages of site.

It is all about traffic. @gagay….Why are asking that. I see many reliable websites using Alexa.

  28. Posted April 27, 2009 at 4:17 am | Permalink

I have been using a ranking application named as “web ceo” and there is a tool available inside it, it is pretty good and accurate tool as I have to paste some code inside my template just like Google Analytics. I think Google Analytics can also track it very well.

  29. Posted May 2, 2009 at 8:52 pm | Permalink

I would use Alexa, google trends and quantcast to get traffic estimates. I would also compare them with some websites with similar rankings for which I know the actual numbers.

Although we have a long list of tools and codes to track that but I think Alexa is good tool which give a good estimate on traffic and other trends. Perhaps all tools give good analysis but we have to use them in proper way.

Yep Alexa is really not accurate because it only gives the amount of requests. A request can be done via a proxy php script so don’t rely alexa if your going to buy a website. You could be badly surprised.
